If you would like to attend a musical event in Israel, then you will find that you have quite a variety from which to choose. You’ll find a great number of musical concerts and performances taking place here: everything from traditional, to classical, to modern and contemporary.
Regardless of your musical tastes and interests, you’ll find something that suits you.
One performance group that you may have already caught a glimpse of on PBS is the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, which was founded by Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman in 1936. At the time it was then called the Palestine Orchestra, and it was founded in order to save talented Jewish musicians in Europe from the Holocaust.
The Israel Philharmonic is consistently ranked among the world’s top orchestras. To view a clip from their 70th anniversary concert, click here: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/gperf/shows/ipo70/video.html
If you love classical music, you will also undoubtedly love the Israel Camerata of Jerusalem, which is considered to be the leading chamber orchestra in Israel today. It was founded in 1985 by Avner Biron, who still serves as the orchestra’s music director and conductor.
The Israel Camerato performs more than 100 concerts per year with pieces that range from Baroque to contemporary. If you’re interested in a more modern style, you’ll love Israeli contemporary music. One of Israel’s best-loved stars is Chava Alberstein. She is known as one of the greatest singers, and certainly one of the country’s most popular. She has released nearly 50 recordings since the 1960s, many of which have gone either gold or platinum.
Chava has released more than 40 albums in Hebrew, six of which have been awarded the Kinor David prize, which is Israel’s Grammy. She has also released six albums in Yiddish, and an English album of covers, which ranges from Gershwin to Paul McCartney. A dozen of her records have gone gold, six platinum, and one triple platinum.
