The city of Haifa is the third largest city within the State of Israel, and also known as one of the country’s prettiest and most scenic cities.
For centuries, it has been a progressive area, seizing opportunities for growth in industry and education. In the 1902 book “Old New Land&” author Theodor Hertzl described Haifa as “the city of the future.”
Haifa is an enjoyable and very popular spot for visitors because of its unique geographical and cultural makeup. The city itself is an intriguing mix of ethnic neighborhoods, old and new, while surrounded by both the mountains and the sea. Muslims, Christians, and Jews co-exist side-by-side here. In Wadi Ninas, there is even an annual festival celebrating the holidays of the three major faiths
One of the most popular tourist attractions in Haifa is the Baha’i Shrine and Gardens. Haifa is the international headquarters for the Baha’i faith, which began in Persia in the mid-19th century. Each year thousands of pilgrims come from around the world to pray at the shrine in Haifa.
The general public can visit the gardens to enjoy its stone peacocks and eagles, towering cypress trees and bubbling fountains. It is a beautiful, restful, and peaceful memorial to the founders of Baha’i. Within the garden, you will also find the shrine that entombs the remains of the Bab, the Baha’ Allah’s herald. The tomb is ornately decorated with gold work and detailed flowers and is one of the most holy places to Baha’i.
While you’re in Haifa, you’ll most certainly want to enjoy at least one of the area’s fine beaches. One of Haifa’s most frequented beaches is Dor, which was founded in 1949 by immigrants from Greece. The Dado and Zamir beaches are great places for water sports or simply relaxing on the golden sands.
If you’re not a big fan of swimming in the ocean, you can check out Maccabi Swimming Pool in the Central Carmel region. It’s kept nice and cool in the summer and is heated in the winter.
For a unique way to see the city, try booking a cycling tour. A bike tour can be challenging. But, if you start at the top of Mt. Carmel and work towards the sea, you can allow gravity to work for you! Mountain Bike Haifa, a local cycling club, is a good resource. Also, the Haifa Tourism Development Association office can provide you with current biking information.
If you like visiting museums, there are plenty to choose from here. You will find the popular Chagall House, which displays work by contemporary Israeli artists. Or you may enjoy the Haifa Museum, which includes the Museum of Modern Art and the Museum of Ancient Art. You’ll also find a very interesting section devoted to Jewish ritual art.
Another popular spot is the Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art, where you can see 6,000 different exhibits of Japanese art, including paintings, books, and statues.
Whether you like to stroll through museums, explore your faith in the Holy Land, mountain bike, or kick back and relax on the beach, Haifa is a wonderful destination for you!
