A trip to Israel has the potential to be a grand adventure, and not just spiritually. For the thrill-seeking sportsman and sportswoman, Israel has much to offer.
Despite its small geographical size, the country offers a vast array of terrains and climates. Where else can you snow ski and take a desert camel ride in the same country?
Israel’s camel tours are known as the best in the Middle East, and the Negev desert region provides the absolute perfect setting for this activity. You’ll be enraptured by the beautiful views, unique plant and animal life, and startling silence of the desert.
A camel tour is a true, authentic Middle Eastern adventure activity, and you can book a tour through several different companies, including the Mamshit Camel Ranch, Jeep Sea Camel Tours, and the camel farm of Eilat. Both short excursions and overnight trips are available.
Do you think you could be enticed to launch yourself off of a cliff or mountainside? It sounds crazy, but the number of visitors who hang glide and paraglide in Israel increases every day.
It is definitely an activity of increasing popularity — probably simply due to the word of mouth gossip about what an exhilarating experience it is. On any given day you can spot paragliders soaring through the air of the scenic coastal Tel Aviv region. You can book a hang gliding or paragliding trip through the Israel Hang Gliding Association.
If you’d rather keep your feet planted on terra firma, you have plenty of terrific options. You may enjoy a day of on- or off-road bike riding through the country’s various bike trails.
For some challenging mountain biking, the rugged Negev terrain is perfect. Or you may enjoy peddling through the picturesque Golan Heights. The country’s numerous bike clubs can even assist you with rental of a bike and all of the equipment you will need.
For a less strenuous activity, try a leisurely horseback ride. The most popular spots for a scenic horseback ride are the Golan Heights and the Upper Galilee, where you’ll trot through rolling hills and valleys as well as lush forests.
I’d certainly be remiss if I didn’t mention Israel’s opportunities for water sports. Israel is one of the best places for scuba diving in the entire world because you have many fascinating spots from which to choose.
In the Mediterranean you can dive down to underwater archeological sites and ancient Roman streets, and in the Red Sea you’ll find towering coral castles that flourish with an array of rainbow-colored fish and other sea life.
Scuba diving here really is getting a glimpse at another world. You’ll find several scuba diving establishments in Eilat, along with others in Achziv, which is on the northern Mediterranean coast, and in Tel Aviv.
The famous Jordan River is also a great spot for water sports as its white waters are perfect for rafting, kayaking, and tubing.
If you really want something to write home about, try skydiving in the Holy Land, although you won’t find as many skydiving companies as those that are available for the other adventure activities. This is because skydiving is reserved for those who are truly not faint of heart!
And if you’ve been skydiving before, I’ll bet you’ll find it doesn’t even compare to the majesty of freefalling over Israel’s breathtaking scenic landscape.
